Why does my Rottweiler puppy Sleep so much: During the growth stage a rottweiler pup sleeps longer, but there are several other reasons also.

Bringing a Rottweiler puppy as a family member could be really exciting and a beautiful experience Usually when we own a puppy we look after all the actions like eating habits, behavior, sleeping schedule, and all other things. One thing that we do notice the most is that young Rottweiler puppies sleep too much, but is it common?

To know this we must know how many hours do Rottweiler’s puppies sleep? Usually, young puppies sleep around 18 to 20 hours a day. In one moment they will be very frisky and the other moment they will get tired and go back to sleep again. Throughout this period they try to learn everything and explore new things.  During the growing stage, they are expected to sleep maximum so they can get proper rest.

Although they have high sleep requirement, they are quite active and agile. So you should notice their sleep schedule and behavior, if you find out they are behaving too lethargic while being awake then you should consult the Vet.

Also, you should keep in mind that you should not disturb your puppy while sleeping. By disturbing the puppy you are actually stopping him from taking rest. As puppies are in the growing stage of their life it is natural and very important to sleep according to their requirement.

Season

Change in the season could be the reason for the increased sleep of your rottweiler’s puppy. Usually, dogs sleep more in the winter season. It is low light conditions and a cold temperature which makes the dog sleepy. High temperature could also make dogs sleepy because some of them may feel fatigued.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle could also affect the sleeping schedule of your puppy. It is obvious that if a dog is active he would get tired and would eventually sleep more than an inactive dog. If you play with your Rottweiler more and train him regularly then he will sleep more to get more rest.

Health

Health issues that could cause illness and it can make your puppy sleep more than normal. You could find out if your puppy is healthy or not by looking at early signs or symptoms. The symptoms could include loss of appetite, fever, restlessness, behavioral problems, and abnormal gait. If you find out something abnormal then you should immediately consult your Vet.

Some of the health issues which could make dog sleepy are kennel cough, liver problems, parvovirus, and distemper. To avoid such health issues you should take your puppy for regular health checkups.

Getting bored

Rottweiler is an active breed of dog which can get easily bored and maybe you are not giving your dog enough attention. Especially Rottweiler puppies love to explore and roam rather than sitting quietly so boredom could also be the reason your Rottweiler puppy is sleeping too much.

Improper diet

Nutritional deficiency could also make your dog sleep more. Feeding a proper diet is very essential especially in the growth stage of a Rottweiler. An improper diet could also affect the growth of your Rottweiler, lead to weakness and bone deformities. It would be better if you visit the Vet and prepare a proper diet chart for your Rottweiler puppy and feed him accordingly. Dehydration could also lead to sleepiness.

Drugs or Vaccination

A sudden increase in the sleep of your puppy could also be caused by vaccination or drugs. You should ask the vet about the side effects while getting your puppy vaccinated. Sleepiness is one of the most common side effects caused by drugs.

How to tell if the rottweiler puppy is actually behaving more sleepy?

It is not difficult to determine that the puppy is being more lethargic and sleepy. Usually, a Rottweiler puppy sleeps around 18 to 20 hours a day but they are really frisky and happy when they are awake. If your Rottweiler puppy acts uninterested in daily to day activities that he earlier founds interesting and doesn’t get stimulated then you should be concerned. Also, you should examine the activity level and sleeping schedule of your puppy.

When to get concerned?

If you find out these symptoms in your Rottweiler puppy then you should be concerned about your puppy’s health and take him to the Vet.

  • Dizziness and weakness
  • Pain and whining
  • Abnormal breathing
  • Panting and Vomiting
  • Illness
